Picking the flowers

All the flowers and foliage featured in the pressed flower candles are grown and picked from my garden in Oxfordshire or my mum’s beautiful garden in Malvern, Worcestershire. Once flowers have been picked, they are then dried in a natural wood flower press - as opposed to lots of pressed flower products that are often dried using chemicals or ordered in bulk from overseas.

Applying the flowers.

I began making candles in 2019 and started experimenting with featuring pressed foliage. I have always loved flowers and thought that using them in candles makes a great unique gift, especially if someone has a favourite flower or particular flowers that are sentimental to them. After lots experimenting and testing, I perfected the process, applying flowers to the glass container using a special non-toxic sealant so the flower is protected as the candle burns down.

More about the wax.

My pressed flower candles are hand poured using rapeseed wax. I chose to use this 100% natural wax as it is completely sustainable with no issues of intensive farming or GMO presence. Rapeseed crops (the fields of yellow flowers you see over the summer, loved by bees) are grown across the UK and Europe so the wax also has a low carbon footprint as it’s not travelling as far to get here, unlike many other natural waxes. Rapeseed wax also gives great results and provides a clean and soot free burn. Unlike paraffin wax, it does not give off any harmful toxins as it burns.

The perfect pour.

Once the rapeseed wax has melted to the perfect temperature and has been blended with the fragrance, the candles are ready for pouring! Wicks are applied to the centre and candle glasses are warmed - this helps the wax adhesion to the glass so your candle looks as perfect as possible!

Setting the candles

Making sure the wick is in the centre of the candle is key for the best possible burn. Once carefully positioned, it’s time to patiently wait for the wax to set before trimming the wick! The wicks have been chosen to give your candle a consistent burn. Remember, when you’re using your JoCo candle for the first time, burn it for at least four hours to get an even melt pool across the width of the candle. Wax has memory so if the candle isn’t burned properly the first time, it will start to tunnel (when the wax doesn’t melt around the edge).

Packaging your candles

Once the candles are set, wicks are trimmed and warning labels are applied. Each and every candle is hand wrapped with care along with a natural wood, branded coaster. All packaging used is 100% recycled, recyclable or biodegradable to make the delivery as eco-friendly as possible.
